The village of Competa lies in a valley at the foot of the Sierra's Almijara and Tejeda, five hundred meters above sea level in Southern Andalusia. The location is fifty kilometers east of Malaga (airport) via the N340 and eighteen kilometers inland from the sea.

Eating is affordable here. The village has many restaurants, bars and lively cafes. The local muscatel grape enriches the local Vino de Competa, renowned in Andalusia for it's potency and quality. There is an indoor market in the main square which sells fish, meat, fruits and vegetables. Three Panadarias selling a variety of fresh breads, pastries and cakes. Two swimming pools, a tennis court, a playground for children and a discotheque for the teenagers. There are local riding stables where horses and mules can be hired at a reasonable cost. This is challenging countryside for mountain bike riding, particularly in the local national reserve.
