Festivities

Andalusia has a tradition of fiesta. There are few places in Spain where the spirit and energy of a society is expressed in such an exuberant and vivacious manner. There are many charming and picturesque local festivals throughout the year including Semana Santa (Holy Week); a week depicting the death of Christ through procession. The villagers and visitors follow the statues with the sombre sound of the drums and trumpets echoing through the streets. The night processions are beautiful with a never ending line of candles.

El Noche Del Vino (Night of the Wine), This is the highlight of the year in Competa for the harvesting of the muscatel grape for the wine. It is celebrated on the 15th August with the main plaza becoming a stage for visiting dancers and musicians from all over Spain. The local families offer 'new' wine from their house to each other and to visitors. There will also be exhibitions of local artists, sculptors and craftspeople.

	In July there is a week of Feria and Fiesta. Dancing and singing and a visiting fair. These festivities continue until dawn for the bravehearted.

Transport and Car hire

There are three buses to and from Malaga Bus Station to Competa village. (approx. 600 pts one way). We can arrange a transfer by taxi (maximum 4 people) 8.000 pts. For people wishing to travel to other places such as Granada, Seville, Cordoba or to explore the local countryside it is possible to hire a car. Malaga Car Hire offers competitive rates. The sea and beaches are twenty minutes drive by car from the house. The merenderos (beach cafes) provide a variety of barbeque, sea food and paella.

Nerja, Malaga, Granada, Cadiz, Seville, Cordoba and the Sierra Nevada (ski-ing) are all within easy reach. The cities offer an exotic contrast to rural pueblo life.

4 Weel Drive Sierra Safaris, Local Riding Stables, Tennis and Swimming

Safaris into the sierras are available. The panoramic views are breathtaking. Picnic lunches are included. These trips can be combined with guided walks. The local riding stables provide trekking into the hills using western style saddles. The village of Competa has two swimming pools and there are tennis and squash courts. The local discoteque brings the teenagers together.

Facilities

There is a bank in the main square with a bank machine in the foyer 24hrs per day. Three well stocked supermarkets. Small internet office for sending e-mails/fax. A telephone exchange run by 'Dolores'. This is an office in the house of 'Dolores' Behind the main square where you can sit down comfortably and make international calls. Dolores will make the connection for you. There are also multiple telephone boxes in the village.

Walking

Walking is the biggest attraction for this region. The national park and the Sierras Almijara and Tejeda rise directly behind the village of Competa and offer a wide variety of walks. We can arrange guided daily walks. There is a book of local detailed walks for those who prefer to be in solitude.

Artists/writers/poets/sculptors

Many creative people have settled here. There is the opportunity to link up with other artists to share ideas. There are private art studios in the village and studio space can be created in house of Casa la Piedra for those wishing to work during their stay. Local exhibitions can be organised for those on a longer stay.

Holistic Therapies

A qualified therapist lives in Competa at the Plazoleta and you have the opportunity to receive Reflexology/ Aromatherapy or Swedish Massage during your visit. A course of treatment can be arranged prior to arrival.
